Fabulous Snow Holiday in Laax, Switzerland

Fabulous Holiday in Laax, Switzerland

Greg and I have just come back from a fabulous holiday in Laax, Switzerland. This was a prize I won from Graubunden Tourism.

We flew by Swiss air to Zurich, which was an incredibly comfortable flight, with spacious seats – and free swiss chocolate! One thing I love about Switzerland, is that you can have less than 5 minutes between a train and bus connection and know –with certainty that you will catch that connection!

We had first class train travel from Zurich to Chur and travelled by bus on the last stage to Laax.

We stayed at the Signina Hotel Resort and Spa, which is one of the loveliest places I have ever stayed. We had a room with a balcony that looked straight up the mountain.

The prize included breakfast, full use of the spa facilities and three days of unlimited ski lift passes.

I loved the hotel and I really did not want to come home!

We ate in the dining room a couple of times and the food was exquisite. One night I had a parsnip soup, followed by a salmon pasta penne and white, swiss chocolate mousse. The flavours were mouth-wateringly delicious.

The staff could not do enough for us. Multilingual staff is definitely an advantage!

We made full use of the spa facilities, as that was most useful after a long day of walking, especially between one mountain café and another. We planned this so that we came to each one, just as it was time for “Kaffee and Kuchen” (coffee and cake)!

Laax is an incredibly beautiful place, nestled high up in the mountains. Laax village itself is 1100m above sea level. The highest points we went to were the peaks of Vorab at 2570m and Cassons at 2675m. I wanted to go right to the top of the Vorab Glacier, but unfortunately this was only accessible by the ski lifts and we did not have skis!

That is a walk for the summertime!

We were not skiing, we were walking everywhere. There were a lot of places where we could walk on the compacted snow and the paths were all well signposted, although we did manage to miss the bright pink posts a few times and ended up slipping and sliding down the edge of the ski slope.

We even managed to see a couple of Steinbock, which are goat-type creatures, with huge horns, that are native to the area.

It snowed overnight on the first day and after that we had brilliant sunshine. It was interesting to see how fast the snow melted, once the sun came out. Although the temperatures were as low as -9C, it did not really feel that cold. I was colder standing on Crewe station on Wednesday evening than I was in Laax!

It was a fabulous break and one of the best prizes I have won. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.

I would love to go back in the summertime.

With abundant blessings.
